Project¶
Clean room¶
openmipsx writes new firmware without copying any of the vendor's code. It uses a clean-room split. One side studies the original firmware and writes specifications that hold only facts. The other side writes the new firmware and tools from those specifications, public datasheets and public standards alone. The specifications contain no vendor code, disassembly or vendor text. The clean-room process describes the roles, what may cross between them, and a provenance log for every source examined.
This is an engineering process, not legal advice.
Roadmap¶
The open-source stack plan describes how the replacement firmware is to be assembled from open-source components, the obstacles in the way, and the order of work. The website plan describes this site.
Contributing¶
Work happens in the openmipsx repositories. Facts about the hardware go into the devices specs, each with its status mark. Changes to this site go to openmipsx.github.io.
Licences¶
The project's own repositories are licensed under the Apache License 2.0. The LLVM fork and picolibc keep their upstream licences.
